“Create your own style… let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.” ― Anna Wintour
I’ve come to realize that the most memorable associations for me are always the ones with a sense of newness, where everyone involved is bursting with immense creative energy yet somehow, very much at ease. It was only a matter of minutes after my dear friend and designer Richa Dhupar showed me some images of her stunning new collection that we decided to do a shoot around them in her hometown, Kolkata. I was thrilled to bits, firstly given that I had never visited the city and secondly because she promised she had some spectacular locations in mind, a brilliant team on board and a whole day to play dress up. So off I went and we quickly planned and shot two gorgeous evening-wear looks, all in one long morning, followed by some delicious breakfast at Flurys – an iconic 30’s style tearoom and cafe that you are bound to fall in love with. (Here’s a picture 🙂) I’d be lying if I told you this wasn’t one of my favorite collaborations till date, especially since I’ve never worked with an all girl’s team before this and it was SO MUCH FUN!!!
Here’s presenting the first of the two looks from STUDIO 17, in the sweetest shade of pastel.
What was interesting to me was how a creation with such utterly feminine and demure undertones, given the peachiest of peach color and sequinned florals, was juxtaposed so seamlessly with a rather fun, flirty and almost playful silhouette. Overall, it looked subtle yet so impactful.
As a person, I’ve always known Richa to be quite free-spirited and easygoing and now I see a bit of that in her creations as well. She’s a perfectionist too so everything is top-notch in terms of quality but when it comes to designing, she lets the process be free-flowing. While some creations may be based on a specific shape or form or color she is inspired by at that moment, another one may just be designed on a whim, or because she liked a particular material so she’d create an entire outfit just around that. There is no method to her madness and her whimsical approach is what gets her clients really excited, especially when she’s creating bespoke outfits for them. Each garment in her collection is unique and is suited to fit multiple body-types. She designs for a woman who has a strong sense of individuality, yet doesn’t take herself too seriously.
This peach off-shoulder cape blouse has been adorned with tonal embellishment and comes with a matching tulle skirt with an embellished waist-band. An outfit so versatile, it would look equally beautiful on your best friend’s cocktail or perhaps your own mehendi function or let’s say one of those upcoming Diwali parties. I styled it with a sleek hand-harness, an embroidered choker and retro-style sunglasses. A romantic braided hairdo and oxblood lips finished the look.
As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the look, so please share your feedback in the comments below 🙂
